Tsavorite: the green garnet

Tsavorite: the green garnet

Three gemstones star in the Brian Gavin team's new Lace Collection. Most of the engagement rings and wedding bands that have just been released feature a crisscross millgrain pattern that frames these stones to create a unique eternity band. If you choose a ring from the Lace Collection, your purchase will either feature diamond, sapphire or tsavorite. You've heard of diamond and have probably encountered sapphire, but here's a little extra information on tsavorite:

Mineral

Tsavorite is one of two green varieties of gemstone in the garnet family. There are more than 20 classifications of the garnet. The word garnet refers to a group of gem. Those get broken down into species and then into varieties. Tsavorite is a variety of the grossular species and forms inside metamorphic rock like other garnets. However, tsavorite is rarer because it requires special conditions to form. The color is infused into the chemical structure of the gem because of the presence of either the elements of chromium or vanadium. All garnets have the same crystal structure, but their chemical composition is what sets them apart. Tsavorite is a comparable substitute for emerald because it is rarely treated, has less inclusions (or impurities) and is more durable.

Color

Tsavorite comes in a range of green hues, all of which are prized for being naturally brilliant. The colors range in shade from bright yellowish green to deeper grassy greens and even occasionally blue-green. The deep colors are another reason tsavorite can compete so well against an emerald. Tsavorite is frequently used instead of the more expensive, softer gem.

Cut

Diamond cut shapes come in many varieties, all of which tsavorite can be formed into. The Lace Collection eternity bands feature these gems in a round cut. When imitating the emerald, tsavorite is frequently cut in the shape by the same name. The emerald cut is known for having a large pavilion, or bottom portion of the gem. The large table on top allows the viewer to see down into the heart of the gem. Although those two shapes are popular, don't let that stop you from choosing tsavorite jewelry in another shape.

Origin

Tsavorite is named after Tsavo National Park in Kenya, where these stones are mined. Tanzania is also known to produce the gems, but Kenya is still the major distributor. Tsavorite was introduced to the world in 1974 when a promotional campaign distributed information through media outlets. Since then, it has grown in popularity.

Occasions

Garnet gem groups are the birthstone of January. It is also the gem for the second anniversary. Custom jewelry designs featuring tsavorite are appropriate gifts for these occasions.
