K-color diamond in a platinum setting?

“My husband and I have been shopping for a new wedding set. We’re going to be saving the diamond from my first wedding set for my son to use when he gets married. My original diamond weighs a little less than a carat. So we were thinking that something in the range of 1.25 carats would be a suitable upgrade, but then I ran across this 1.812 carat, K-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature diamond. I suspect that it’s a bit warmer in color than the H-color diamond that I’m used to, but a friend of mine has a K-color diamond and I think it’s quite pretty! My concern is that I like platinum, and I’m wondering about setting a K-color diamond in a platinum setting. Will the color of the diamond be more apparent when set in platinum?”

Setting a K-color diamond in platinum prongs:

Congratulations on your decision to upgrade your wedding set! I am sure that you’re quite excited. I love the idea of passing on your current diamond to your son. May all the love and joy which you’ve experienced throughout your marriage bless his union as well. Receiving the blessing of such a loved and cherished diamond will certainly go a long way.

In my experience, K-color diamonds look perfectly fine set in platinum. In fact, the whiteness of the platinum prongs is going to reflect throughout the diamond. Generally speaking, this should help to improve our perception of diamond color by about one color grade. Thus the K-color diamond is likely to appear a bit whiter, more towards the high side of K-color to J-color. Setting a K-color diamond in yellow gold prongs, would have the tendency to make it look about one color grade warmer.

The odds are that your friend’s K-color diamond is set in white gold or platinum prongs. If you like the way your friend’s diamond looks, you should love the way a K-color Brian Gavin Signature round hearts and arrows diamond looks! The combination of the center-range proportions and higher degree of optical precision exhibited by our diamonds produces an exceptional amount of light return and sparkle that is out of this world!

How yellow do K-color diamonds look?

People frequently express concern about how yellow K-color and faint yellow diamonds are going to look when set in white gold or platinum. While the clarity images and video provided on the diamond details pages for Brian Gavin Signature round diamonds are not really intended to be used for judging the body color of the diamonds, the fact of the matter is that you can kind of get an idea of how warm or cool in tone a diamond happens to be by viewing the diamond from a side-profile. As you can see, the 1.812 carat, K-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round diamond is actually pretty light in hue and saturation. I have no doubt it will look great set in platinum.

One thing to keep in mind is that diamonds are not really “yellow” in the same way that we tend to think of the color yellow as a solid object. Diamonds are crystalline in structure, they do not exhibit solid colors, but rather more of a saturation of color, a slight hint of color. The saturation of color exhibited by a diamond is most accurately assessed from a side profile, where it will be most apparent. However, this is not how we tend to view diamonds, we gaze upon them from a top-down profile, where all we’re really going to see is the sparkle.

If you’re specifically looking for color when you view a K-color diamond set in platinum from a side profile, then you’re likely to see a slight hint of color. It will not be something which is blatantly apparent, but rather something that you have to specifically look for, intently focus upon in order to see. When I look at K-color diamonds set in platinum settings from a top-down perspective, it is quite difficult to see the actual body color of the diamond, because my eyes are blinded by the sparkle. Thus I think it is perfectly fine to set K-color diamonds in platinum.
