December Birthstone: Tanzanite

When we think of winter, we think of sipping hot cocoa, cozy nights by the fireplace, and crisp cool weather, but for our Sagittarius friends out there, December also means the season to bring out their favorite Tanzanite pieces!

Tanzanite is the stunning December birthstone and has a rich and unique history. The first stone was discovered not too long ago in 1967 by Manual d'Souza in Northern Tanzania. Tanzanite is special because it can only be found in that region and is believed to be created by the tectonic plate activity from Mount Kilimanjaro. The gemstone is highly recognized for its complex composition and brilliant blue hues.

Tiffany and Co. was the first jeweler to make this remarkable gemstone into jewelry and christened it 'Tanzanite' after its country of origin. In 2002, due to its rising popularity, Tanzanite became the official birthstone of December, along with Zircon and Turquoise.
