Diamond care: How to clean your diamonds
Has the initial luster of your custom engagement ring worn off? If you don't have time to head over to your jeweler but need to up the shine factor in a jiffy, you can use these three at-home cleaning solutions to replenish your diamond ring's sparkle and shine.
Baking soda - This standard pantry item is a good cleaning ingredient because it is non-abrasive, meaning it won't scratch or harm your jewelry. Pour two teaspoons of baking soda into a bowl, followed by one tablespoon of warm water. Mix the combination to create a paste. Take off your ring and begin rubbing the paste over the entire band and diamonds. Make sure the sinkhole is covered before washing off your ring with warm water. After the paste has been removed, your ring should reveal a restored luster. Dry off the ring with a lint-free cloth so you don't get any strands stuck between the stone and prong setting. Repeat the process as necessary until you have removed all of the dirt - you can also use a toothbrush dipped in the paste solvent and gently scrub the ring to get into hard to reach crevices.
Dishwasher detergent - If your dishwasher detergent can make your glasses sparkle like new, then surely it can clean your beautiful ring. You'll need to mix three parts of warm water with one part detergent to prepare. If your engagement or wedding band is really dirty, leave it in the bowl or glass of solution overnight. Either way, you'll want to dip a soft bristle toothbrush into the mixture and scrub your ring. This particular cleaning solvent is great for removing lotion and oil that may have accumulated on your ring. Rinse your ring with water before polishing it off with a lint-free cloth.
Ammonia - If your engagement ring is beyond dirty, consider this strong, albeit effective cleaning option. Mix one part ammonia with one part warm water in a glass or bowl. Let your ring sit in the solution for at least five minutes, if not longer, to help the dirt and grime dissolve before using a toothbrush to get into the hard-to-reach areas. Rinse, then dry and polish the ring with the appropriate cloth.
Everyday solutions - Although a diamond is forever, that i doesn't mean you can't take it off while working around the house. To keep your ring safe and preserve its brilliance, consider removing your ring while doing the dishes, showering, working in the yard or applying hair and body products. All of these situations can cause your ring to accumulate dirt, oil and grime. Make sure to set your ring in a safe place while you work - situate a ring holder next to the kitchen and bathroom sink for a safe storage place until you're ready to put it back on.
